Globular Mass

Red Blood Cell

Blood volume is estimated by isotopic labeling (attaching a radioactive isotope of a cell type allowing their identification), using the radioactive technetium or chromium to mark and measure red blood cell volume, iodine to mark albumin and measuring plasma volume. The measurement of these volumes enables us to distinguish between a true anemia (low red cell volume) of a false anemia (increased plasma volume) or a true polycythemia (increased red cell volume) of a false polycythemia (decreased volume plasma).[cf.larousse.fr]
